OICW stands for Objective Individual Combat Weapon and was an active program which mission was to designed the next-generation assault rifle
for needs of the US army.
Rifles or granade launchers like XM25, designed under the OICW project were created to disable any enemy armed forces behind the cover by using
airburst amunition. Rifles used automatically pre-set technology which set the charges to explode on time
when the granade was in range of the enemy.
Two weapons came out of the oicw program: XM8 rifle and XM25 airburst weapon.
XM8 lightweight assault rifle, manufactured by Heckler & Koch, who had high hopes for XM8 to replace the
standard infantry rifle, but the project was canceled in 2005.
The XM8 was build out of composite materials, which could outstand any enviroment in desert or Arctic. Sights
were the usual, as compared to the M4 carbine, with some other electronic addons like the AN/PEQ-2, Aimpoint CompM2, ACOG, and/or BUIS.
Plus it had an integrated grenade launcher - XM320 - which can also be found on M4 and M16 rifle.
XM25 is a grenade launcher, manufactured by Heckler & Koch, and was created to replace the XM29 from the OICW program. 25mm grenade amunition
combined with mid-air explosion technology are the primary specifications which really seperate it from other
granade launchers. Mid-air explosion is possible with help of a laser, which is used to determine the distance to the target.
It can be used effectively in range up to 500 meters away. XM25 is gas operated and semi automatic and currently awaiting its
deployment which should happen in 2012.
